Hospitality House For Family & Friends Of Patients

Year: 2014

Project Details: Fr. Leodan Hernandez, House of the Pilgrim.

The parish San Nicolas is located in the city of San Miguel, El Salvador. Across the street is a public hospital, San Juan de Dios where most of the patients are from very poor families. Parishioners noticed that family members of patients were often sleeping in the yard around the hospital or in the streets.  Many of them come long distances where the journey to get to the hospital on public transportation might take most of the day and is cost prohibitive. After much research and working with hospital professionals, a bank loan was taken and a two-story, seven-room house was constructed. Day to day expenses are covered by a local sponsor program of parishioners and friends. In the first nine months of operation 1278 people were served. Some stayed for several days while others took a meal or two at the house. The Loya foundation provided financial support to pay off the mortgage and contribute to future needs.
